On the momentous milestone of the Platinum Jubilee Celebration of CIFRI, workshop on
‘Biodiversity of river Ganga and its Conservation for Sustainable Fisheries’ organized on 15th

Prof. Amalesh Chowdhury of University of Calcutta in his address said that Ganga and Bramhaputra
is the youngest river of the world. He said that fish seed availability in river Ganga was very high

fishes of river Ganga. After independence, large number of barrages and the system of canals has
been established on river Ganga. Now the river is not only facing pollution, but also the reduced flow.
Dr. J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fishery Science) ICAR, in his presidential address thanked

As a comprehensive approach to develop fisheries of river Ganga, the Central Inland Fisheries
Research Institute is presently monitoring 18 sampling points distributed in 4 different states of the
country as a pilot project to rejuvenate fish stocks in the river.
The prime objectives of NMCG sponsored project includes exploratory survey of the fish diversity,
stock assessment of the prized Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, Calbasu and Mahaseer along with seed production
of selected fish species and ranching in the depleted river stretch. Fishes like Calbasu, Mrigal & Rohu
will not only increase the fish catch but also will add in maintaining the cleanliness of the river as they
feed on organic remnants in the river. Till date, a total of 8 ranching cum awareness programme have
been organized in several states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal with an aim to
restore and conserve the depleting fish stock of the river.
