In AAS, liquid sample is aspirated to become aerosols of fine particles (nebulization), Flame
vaporizes the aerosols (atomization), Elevated temperatures in a flame or furnace changes the
chemistry of atoms. Temperature affects the ratio of excited and unexcited atoms.Beer’s law is
used to calculate concentration of specific element.
Application and studies related to
Concentration of metals in water, sediment and biotic community. In laboratory routinely
analysed concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn by flame mode. Arsenic by hydride
generation mode.
User Instruction (how to bring samples)
Water samples to be preserved with adding conc. HNO 3 after filtration. Fresh biological samples may be
ice preserved or dried. Then all the samples are digested with suitable acid to bring metals into free
solution phase. All the samples to be passed through filtration (Whatman 42 or equivalent) before
feeding into instrument. The processed samples are now ready for analysis in AAS.For analysis of arsenic
in hydride generation mode, the acid for processing of water samples is HCl.
