Capacity Building through Exposure Visit: OUAT KVK Scientists at ICAR-CIFRI

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) organized a one-day exposure visit for scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) under OUAT, Odisha, on 24th March 2026. A total of nine scientists representing different KVKs, namely Angul, Jharsuguda, Ganjam-I, Kendrapara, Ganjam-II, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Nayagarh, participated in the programme. The main objectives of the exposure visit were to provide scientific exposure to ongoing inland fisheries research, innovative inland fisheries practices River, wetland and reservoirs), and technology dissemination approaches developed by ICAR-CIFRI. The visit will enhance participants’ understanding of sustainable fisheries management in inland water resources and culture-based fisheries practices. Furthermore, the programme emphasized strengthening institutional collaboration between ICAR-CIFRI and KVKs for effective transfer of fisheries technologies to farmers and fishers, thereby promoting livelihood enhancement and supporting the sustainable development of inland fisheries in Odisha. During the programme, heads of different divisions of ICAR-CIFRI shared their valuable insights on respective divisional research activities and technological interventions.
The presentations highlighted fisheries research and development initiatives undertaken in major rivers and reservoirs of Odisha, along with institute contributions toward resource assessment, fisheries enhancement, and management strategies. Discussions also covered research related to aquatic pollution monitoring, wetland fisheries, riverine fisheries, fish catch estimation from inland fisheries resources, fish disease surveillance and management, and products developed by ICAR-CIFRI for fisheries enhancement. The deliberations further highlighted the application of GIS and drone-based technologies for fisheries resource mapping, along with the use of R-based analytical tools for data analysis, report preparation and decision support in inland fisheries management. In addition, advancements in pen and cage culture technologies for reservoir fisheries development were elaborated, with emphasis on their role in improving fish production and livelihood opportunities. The programme was successfully conducted under the guidance and leadership of the Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, whose support and encouragement contributed significantly to the effective organization of the event along with support from HoDs , Dr. S. K. Smanta and Dr. Arman U. M.
Overall, it was ended with satisfactory remarks of the KVKs scientists OUAT, Odisha. This exposure visit was successfully coordinated by Dr. Pranay Kumar Parida, senior scientist and Dr. Pritijyoti Majhi, scientist.
