Enhancing aquaculture production has been a major national target for livelihood generation and nutritional security. Chhattisgarh possesses extensive reservoir resources supporting a large number of installed cages, besides tanks offering strong potential for fish production. However, diseases pose major challenge to aquaculture gain, especially in absence of field level awareness, diagnostic tools and management strategies. To reduce disease loss through capacity development, ICAR-CIFRI partnered with the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Chhattisgarh, to organize a two-day workshop focused on disease diagnosis and improved management practices in cage culture and aquaculture. The programme was held on 8–9 September 2026 at Awareness Center, Telibandha, Department of Fisheries, Raipur, under the guidance of Dr. Pradip Dey, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, and Dr. S. K. Manna, Principal Investigator, AINP on Fish Health. Dr. A. K. Bera and Ms. Sohini Chatterjee addressed key aspects of fish health including field-level disease detection, setting up of diagnostic facilities, capacity development in disease reporting, and maintaining health records for fish and water bodies—with the broader goal of building a aquaculture and reservoir specific database to prepare towards better health management practice. On-site interactive session-cum-field demonstration on better health management practice was also conducted at cage culture of Dudhawa reservoir, Kanker District. The workshop benefitted 94 participants including cage culture, aquaculture/tank culture farmers and Fisheries officials of the State. During the two days of deliberation, Shri N. S. Nag, Director of Fisheries, and Ms. Beena Gadpale, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Chhattisgarh, along with other fishery officials attended the programme and highlighted its significance in boosting fish production in the state. They encouraged the participants and urged ICAR-CIFRI to conduct such interactive training programmes regularly in different parts of the state so that farmers and officials from other districts could also be benefitted.
