Stakeholder’s Meet and Distribution of Inputs for Climate Smart Wetland Fisheries under NICRA SC-SP of ICAR-CIFRI.
A stakeholder meeting cum awareness program was organized by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore at Media beel, North 24 Parganas on 16 December, 2020 to create awareness on climate change and its deleterious impacts on wetland fisheries under the project “National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA)”. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI presided over the meeting.The meeting was attended by 100 fishers and project investigators from the Institute. The program was inaugurated with the release of 45000 fish fingerlings of Indian Major Carps, bata (Labeo bata), puti (Puntius sarana) and Tengra (Mystus sp.) by the Director to boost culture based fisheries production from the wetland and conservation of indigenous fishes. He then addressed the fishers and emphasized on the need of conserving the wetlands and discussed various issues faced by the fishers while managing the fisheries of the floodplain wetland. He stated that the Institute is committed to lend technological support to the inland fishers of the country and motivated them to build their capacities on scientific management practices and climate resilient tools for sustainable fisheries. Addressing the gathering Dr. U. K. Sarkar (Head Reservoir and Wetland fisheries Division and Principal Investigator, NICRA) briefed about the programme and explained the various climate smart adaptation strategies. Dr A. K. Das, In charge, Training & Extension cell emphasized on concerted effort of the stakeholders for better management of the resources. The office bearers of co-operative societies and fishers of Media and Panchpota wetlands expressed the difficulties and challenges faced in managing the wetland fisheries in the changing scenario. The program ended with an active interaction session between the fishers and scientific staff of the Institute. The Fisher’s cooperative was also handed over 3 FRP coracles and 2.5tons CIFRI CageGrow feed.
