ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) organized a virtual training programme on Hilsa fishery conservation for livelihood improvement with major focus on the river Ganga in association with National mission for clean Ganga (NMCG), Ministry of Jal Shakti, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Science& Diary. The main objective of the training programme was to bring awareness among all the stake holders and to highlight community participation in the biodiversity conservation plan specific to Hilsa fishery. Dr. B.K. Das, Director highlighted ICAR-CIFRI’s interventions and research activities on Hilsa carried out from 2012 to 2024. Dr. Das urged scientists, fishermen, and administrative officials to work as a team towards MISSION HILSA and highlighted the involvement of Youth in the Hilsa conservation programme. Prof. Abdul Wahab, Team Leader of ECOFISH Project-USAID, WorldFish, Bangladesh explained the important role of science based community participation for Hilsa production improvement in Bangladesh. Prof. Wahab highlighted that due to interventions of Hilsa fishery co-management hilsa production in Bangladesh has increased to 9% in during 2015 to 2020. In additions, important lectures on 1) Hilsa research towards conservation and livelihood improvement: ICAR-CIFRI’s recent initiatives 2) Hilsa conservation and livelihood improvement: Case studies from Bangladesh 3) Hilsa conservation in Hooghly-Bhagirathi river: Threats and future plans 4) Re-establishing Hilsa fisheries in river Ganga with focus on middle stretch for livelihood improvement: A holistic approach, were delivered by the experts. Dr. Sandeep Behera, Senior consultant, Biodiversity Conservation, NMCG highlighted the role of regional research collaboration particularly for the transboundary aquatic animals and ICAR-CIFRI’s role for scientific involvement and outputs. More than 260 participants representing fishermen, students, fisheries officials from different states and personel from Universities and research institutes were participated and interacted actively. The entire programme was co-ordinated by Drs. A.K.Sahoo, S. Samanta, B.K.Behera and the team.
