CIFRI Awards
A training on "Fisheries Enhancement in Floodplain Wetlands" was conducted on 09.03.2021 at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore. The training was conducted to apprise and improve the management strategy for sustainable enhancement of fish yield in floodplain wetlands of India. The training was designed with an objective of 1) Basics of fisheries enhancement protocol for floodplain wetlands 2) Enclosure culture for seed raising technology and 3) Nursery/Captive fish seed raising and management. The training was attended by more than 50 fishers from different parts of India including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam and West Bengal. In his introductory remark, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and Convener of the training programme motivated the participants and highlighted the importance of inland open water fisheries for livelihood improvement and employment generation for the rural community. Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Coordinator of the training and HoD, RWF Division warmly welcomed the participants from different parts of India and briefly highlighted the aim and objective of the training to the participants. Dr. M. A. Hassan HoD, FEM Division discussed the macrophyte management and stock enhancement in wetlands. Dr. A.K. Das, Principal Scientist and I/C T & E unit highlighted the scope of enclosure culture for seed raising for culture based fisheries in wetland. Dr. H. S. Swain, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI mentioned the management technique of seed raising in nursery pond for culture based fisheries in wetland. Dr. Suman Kumari, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI elaborated the importance of small indigenous fishes in wetlands and its management strategy. Dr. Aparna Roy, Senior Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI, mentioned the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and its importance to the wetland fishers. The participants in the feedback and interaction session raised their issues for wetland fisheries management which was clarified by the experts. Some of the participants also shared their experience on management of wetlands fisheries. The training was co-coordinated by Dr. Suman Kumari, Dr. Lianthuamluaia and Dr. A. Roy.
