On the occasion of National Fish Farmers Day Fishes were released into the Ganga River by ICAR-CIFRI.

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Prayagraj has celebrated National Fish Farmers’ Day on the bank of Ganga river at three spots viz. Sangam nose, Ram ghat and Dasashwamedh ghat of Prayagraj on 10th July 2021. The main function was organized as Ranching cum mass awareness programme at Sangam Nose, Prayagraj. Smt. Abhilasha Gupta ‘Nandi’, Hon’ble Mayor, Prayagraj was the Chief Guest of the occasion. She addressed the gathered audience and highlighted the importance of Ganga and fishes for mankind. She urged the people to keep Ganga river pollution free which ultimately help in maintaining biodiversity of the river. Specially procured and reared 3000 (three thousand) fishes of depleting Indian Major Carp (IMC) were ranched in the Ganga river to restore and conserve these fishes. Dr D. N. Jha, Scientist in-charge of Centre welcomed the guest and explained the importance of ranching in detail to the assembled audience. He also informed the audience about the work done by ICAR-CIFRI to conserve & restore important fishes and biodiversity of the Ganga river. Programme was also addressed by special guest Sri Rajesh Sharma, Convener, Ganga Vichar Manch and representative of Namami Gange. He informed the people about different steps taken to keep Ganga clean and stressed for the role of common mass for this purpose.

On this occasion officials from Ganga Vichar Manch,WII, Fishery Dept., Ganga Prahari, Ganga Task Force, fishers of nearby villages, fish traders and local people living on the bank of the Ganga were present. Dr Venkatesh Thakur, Scientist, extended vote of thanks at the end of the program. The programme was organised and attended by Dr Monika Gupta, Mr Jeetendra Kumar, Dr Sandeep Kumar Mishra, Mr ShivJanam Verma, Sri Sandeep Mishra and other staff of ICAR-CIFRI Prayagraj.
