ICAR-CIFRI has conducted a five days capacity building programme for the YAAS (super cyclone) affected women fishers of Kultoli on Ornamental fish farming. Kultoli is a village under Basanti block (Sunderban Area) of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal and dominated with SC &ST population and mostly dependent of rice-fish as an economical activities and livelihood. Under the leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR- CIFRI an ornamental fish village was planned to develop in Kultoli area, as the fishers’ women shown their interest for Ornamental fisheries. At the initial stage, 50 ornamental tank, fish seed, fish feed and other accessories were distributed to the beneficiaries. Hand holding support was provided to the beneficiaries from ICAR-CIFRI. In the 2nd stage 50 women beneficiaries were trained on ornamental fish farming with a target to achieve around 200 women beneficiaries from this cluster. The participants were trained on different aspects of ornamental fisheries, viz. Identification of indigenous and exotic ornamental fish, Handling of ornamental fishes, taking care of the live bearers and egg layers, Male female segregation and breeding, Feed requirement, Live feed collection and culture, Feed preparation, Precautionary measures, Common diseases in ornamental fish keeping and their medicines and Fabrication of aquarium and the accessories etc. Director, ICAR-CIFRI distributed a booklet on ornamental fish keeping to each woman fishers. The ornamental fish village was also inaugurated during this training programme. This programme was undertaken in association with Milon Tirtha Society, a NGO located in the area.
