ICAR-CIFRI observed 16th Parthenium Awareness Week (16-22 August 2021)
The Honorable Director General ICAR had appealed to all ICAR Institutes to celebrate 16-22 August as “Parthenium Awareness Week” and ensure a Parthenium Free campus under the national major activity of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. In compliance, this Institute observed the 16th Parthenium Awareness Week by organizing various awareness programs and demonstrations regarding the health and environmental hazards posed by Partheium. Control of Parthenium by uprooting and herbicide spraying both inside and outside the CIFRI campus premises was also taken up.
Under the able leadership of Dr. B.K.Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, an awareness program was conducted in ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore on 21.08.2021 where the staff members were sensitized about the menace of Parthenium. It was followed by a cleaning and sanitation program of the ICAR-CIFRI Campus premises as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan with special emphasis on identifying and uprooting of the Parthenium weed. Local areas surrounding the Institute were also included in this program where Parthenium weed was identified and sprayed with herbicide for weed control. The uprooted weeds were composted in the vermicompost pit of the Institute.
In addition, an outreach program regarding Parthenium awareness was conducted in the Mathpara & Uttar Bharmhapore village in Khalsi beel area of Haringhata block, Nadia,Women of fisherfolk communities were sensitized regarding the manace of parthenium weed. Local people, farmers and students were also sensitized in Beladanga beel of North 24 Parganas .
