ICAR-CIFRI supports Cyclone YAAS affected fish farmers of Sunderban under SCSP programme Cyclone Yaas has affected the coastal Odisha and West Bengal including Sunderban and damaged the agricultural crops including fisheries and livestock. To support these rural distressed people ICAR-CIFRI extended the help under SCSP programme to rejuvenate their livelihood by providing fisheries inputs for their small and marginal ponds. The support is provided to 14 GPs of two CD Blocks (Gosaba & Basanti) covering 32 hamlets having pond size of 0.02 ha to 0.04 ha in their backyards. A 2-Days mass awareness camp-cum-input distribution was carried out in collaboration with Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Royal and Kultoli Milan Tirtha Society at Narayantala Ramkrishna Vidya Mandir playground of Kultoli, S24Pgs covering 500 beneficiaries (250 beneficiaries in each day). This includes 20% women SC beneficiaries also. The inputs such as 105 kg of feed, 750 nos of advanced fingerling and 20 kg lime were provided to each fisher. The lime was initially provided on 25th August to improve the pond water condition prior to one week stocking of fish fingerlings.
This was targeted to generate approx. Rs. 2.0 crores with an investment of Rs. 32 lakhs aiming at the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s dream towards “Doubling Farmers Income”, which is more than four fold in reality. Further, this was also aimed at reviving their livelihood with the support from the SCSP programme by the Institute. Dr. B. K. Das, Director of the Institute inaugurated the programme on 2nd September addressed the gathering on both the days. He stressed upon as to how this will increase their income as well as livelihoods, which will be subsequently boosted up their revenues for sustainable farming practices taking fish culture as a component. Prior to this, ICAR-CIFRI has also distributed similar type of inputs to the Fani affected fishers, who were highly benefitted by such type of interventions. But the dreaded cyclone Yaas again damaged the fish stock with the influx of saline water in to their small scale fisheries. Founder President of Kultali Milon Tirtha Society, applauded the ICAR-CIFRI intervention, which was first of its kind in the Sunderban area covering a large scale of beneficiaries in the domain of fish culture rendering a great help to uplift their livelihoods.
Dr. A. K. Das, In-charge, Training & Extension Unit, Dr. P. K. Parida, Nodal officer, SCSP of the Institute were also present and summarized how the programme will benefit the individual fisher involved in these massive awareness-cum-input distribution programmes. The programme was coordinated and managed following the COVID protocol.
The programme was well supported by Mr. Sujit Chowdhury, Dr. A. Saha, and Dr. Sreya Bhattachrjya of ICAR-CIFRI and staffs of Milon Tirtha Society.
