Awareness programme on ‘System Diversification for fisheries enhancement in inland open waters’ in Kanjirapuzha Dam, Palakkad, Kerala
As a part of the Nation Campaign on ‘System Diversification in Aquaculture’ under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, ICAR-CIFRI Kochi Research Station conducted awareness programme on ‘System Diversification for fisheries enhancement in inland open waters’ in Kanjirapuzha Dam, Palakkad district, Kerala on 1st September 2021. The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Sati Rajeevan (President, Kanjirapuzha Grama Panchayat) in the presence of Shri. Siddique Cheppadan (Vice-President, Kanjirapuzha Grama Panchayat), and Shri. Sreedharan (Fishery Development Officer). There were 40 participants including 20 active fishermen belonging to the Kanjirapuzha SC/ST Fisheries Co-operative Society participated and officials from the Kerala Fisheries Department and Kerala Irrigation Department. Dr. Deepa Sudheesan, Scientist & Officer in charge welcomed the distinguished invitees and fishers of Kanjirapuzha to this programme. Dr. Thankam Theresa Paul, Scientist, gave a brief overview of the institute and centre activities to the participants. They also took lectures on CIFRI technologies and strategies for enhancing fish production from reservoirs. The fishers expressed their interest in starting cage culture in the reservoir and also voiced their concerns – destruction of fishing nets by otters, loss of stocked seeds – in the interactive session. The program was successfully organized by Dr. Deepa Sudheesan and Dr. Thankam Theresa Paul with the help of Shri S. Manoharan, CTO and Shri. P. V. Shajil, Technician of ICAR-CIFRI Kochi centre.
