CIFRI Awards
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore celebrated “World Rivers Day” at Farakka, West Bengal in river Ganga on 26th September, 2021. The major objectives of the celebration were to educate and create awareness among the fishermen and public to keep rivers clean and to conserve the aquatic biodiversity. ICAR-CIFRI in association with National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), Ministry of Jal Shakti celebrated the day with a special focus on Dolphin conservation under the Honourable Prime Minister’s flagship programme on Project Dolphin. In addition, Hilsa, a transboundary and commercial important fish species whose conservation and propagation in river Ganga is highly essential. ICAR-CIFRI took these two major initiatives on this special World Rivers Day and sensitize the fishermen as well s public in and around Farakka. On this occasion, 78 adult hilsa of average weight 250g were ranched at the upstream of Farakka barrage. Fishermen were provided with posters and leaflets on Dolphin and Hilsa conservation. Staffs of ICAR-CIFRI explained deeply on the impact of domestic and industrial sewage on the aquatic ecosystem and their impact on aquatic biodiversity and suggested measures towards improving the river health. The entire programme was carried out under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director and the supports from the staffs of NMCG.
