CIFRI Awards
The institute organised a ‘field day’ at the Khalsi wetland of Haringhata Block, District Nadia, West Bengal on 24th September 2021 for sensitizing the women beneficiaries on diversified income generating enterprises under the DBT project titled “Empowering women of Wetland-dependent fisherfolk community of lower Gangetic plain through cost-effective technologies”. A total of 71 participants from the adjacent villages of the Khalsi wetland namely Khalsi, Mathpara, Kanapukurdanga, Uttarbrahmapur took part in the programme. The project PI Dr. Aparna Roy informed the success of the project components made in the previous year and encouraged the women to continue their hard work in the successive years. She also explained the benefits of the various components under the project and their role in nutritional and livelihood security.
The other project scientists Dr. A.K. Bera and Dr. Arun Pandit (ICAR-CIFRI), Prof. Pintoo Bandopadhyay, Dr. Sanchita Mandal (BCKV, Kalyani) were also present in the programme. Dr. Bandopadhyay encouraged the farmers to adopt various cost-effective technologies while focusing on the kitchen gardening and mushroom cultivation. Highlighting the backyard poultry component, Dr. Bera explained measures to be taken for hygiene maintenance of the birds and the role of poultry enterprises in becoming financially strong. Dr. Pandit briefly discussed about the economical aspects of the various components and benefits of forming FPO including its impact on the socio economic. Dr. Mandal explained various technical aspects of mushroom cultivation and kitchen gardening. The experts encouraged the successful women to impart training to the new beneficiaries as well as to the neighbouring women farmers. The programme was concluded by the experts motivating the beneficiaries for their dedicated participation in the project. They were also informed that the Director Dr. B.K. Das has assured continuous support and help of the institute. The sensitization programe was followed by stocking of 420 kg good quality IMC fingerlings in four pens installed in the wetland and also providing CIFRI Cagegrow feed.
