CIFRI Awards
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI), Barrackpore in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Manipur had successfully carried out culture of the endemic carp, Osteobrama belangeri in HDPE modular cages in Takmu pat, Bishnupur district of Manipur under the NEH component of ICAR-CIFRI. Fingerlings of O. belangeri (7-10 g) were stocked in 10 cages (individual cage dimension of 6 x 4 x 2 m) and reared for 6 months and fed with CIFRI CageGrow feed twice-a-day @ 3-5% body weight. After the culture duration, the fish had grown to an average weight of 120 g per fish. Some of the smaller individuals were released in the pat (lake) for their further growth and conservation purpose. On the occasion of final harvesting and release of fish, a field-day was conducted on 28.10.2021 at Takmu pat cage culture site to share the results with the fishery officers, fishers and other participants on cage farming of indigenous species having high local demand and solicit suggestions for future experiments. The programme was attended by Shri K. Dineshwar Singh, DFO Bishnupur district, Manipur; other staff of Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Manipur (K. Rajiv Singh, O. Maipak Singh, T. Joykumar Singh); Scientists from ICAR-CIFRI (Dr. Sona Yengkokpam, Ms. T. Nirupada Chanu and Dr. Samarendra Singh) and more than 50 fishers. Mr. K. Rajiv Singh welcomed the Scientists from ICAR-CIFRI and the participants. Dr. Sona Yengkokpam gave a brief background of the cage culture demonstration carried out in the pat. She expressed her gratitude to Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and the Coordinator of NEH Component & Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Head (Acting), ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati and PI of NEH Component for planning and execution of the cage culture demonstration. Ms. Nirupada Chanu explained about the fisheries of Loktak lake and the need for conservation of local indigenous fishes. Dr. Samarendra Singh discussed about the importance of water quality parameters. Shri K. Dineshwar Singh expressed his gratitude to ICAR-CIFRI for collaborating with the Department and providing inputs for the cage culture demonstration. He urged the farmers to acquire knowledge and harness the potential of cage aquaculture in wetlands/ lakes of Manipur. Fishers interacted and thanked ICAR-CIFRI for reaching out to them and pledged to work unitedly for the development of wetland fisheries. Mr. O. Maipak Singh proposed the vote of thanks.
