ICAR-CIFRI Conducted Campaign on Climate Resilient Inland Fisheries at Raja wetland, West Bengal as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav
Wetland not only serves as a breeding ground of indigenous fish, storage of flood water, grazing ground of domestic animals but also it helps in carbon sequestration, eco- tourism and livelihood security of local people. The aquatic ecology and fisheries of wetlands are highly impacting due to the continuous climate change and increasing anthropogenic activities. Raja wetland is a vulnerable wetland due to the prevalence of climatic anomaly and urbanization causing unstable fisheries and ecological status of the wetland leading to livelihood insecurity of the fishers. To mitigate this problem ICAR-CIFRI has conducted a national campaign at Raja wetland, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal on 06th November 2021 to raise awareness on Climate Resilient Inland Fisheries as a part of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav under the NICRA project. The campaign was participated by around 20 fishermen. The program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore and was coordinated by Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Principal Investigator, NICRA and HoD, RWFD, ICAR-CIFRI. An interactive session on mitigation and adoption strategies against climate change was carried out with local fishermen in the presence of Dr. Lianthuamluaia, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI and CO-PI NICRA and research scholars of NICRA project. Fishermen were also sensitized about climate smart fish culture system like pen culture and cage culture.
