Doubling the income of cyclone affected SC and ST Farmers of Gangasagar : large-scale intervention of ICAR-CIFRI

ICAR -CIFRI stand by the cyclone trodden fishers of Sagar island, Sundarbans targeting towards livelihood support and doubling their income through scientific intervention and providing inputs as fish seed, lime, feed and medicine to a large group of SC and ST beneficiaries (350 numbers) of Sagar Island. The programme was undertaken in two places Jibontala (150 beneficiaries) and Krishnanagar (200 beneficiaries) covering the beneficiaries of 14 villages and five Gram Panchayats of Gangasagar on 10th November 202. Fishers were provided with inputs like 36 tons of fish feed, around 100 lakh fish seed and 350 nos of 200 ml fish medicines. Addressing to the farmers, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore urged on doubling the farmers’ income by scientific fish farming and proper utilization of the inputs from ICAR-CIFRI through SCSP / STC program. A technical team led by Dr. A. K. Das and Dr. P. K. Parida explained the technical details for scientific fish farming for doubling the fish production and income of fishers. Mrs. Namita Hazra, Panchayat Pradhan, Rudranagar, Sagar appreciated the efforts of ICAR-CIFRI and advised the farmers to utilize their resources and support of ICAR-CIFRI for increasing their income. The benefit derived out of this program would not only be boosting their economy but also bring back their moral strength for future course of their endeavours. In the afternoon, Dr. B. K. Das appraised Sri Bankim Hazra, Hon’ble Minister of Sundarban Affairs & Development, Govt. of West Bengal about the initiatives and strategy of ICAR-CIFRI for the development of Gangasagr fish farmers. The programme was supported by Swami Vivekananda Youth and Cultural Society, Sagar and other staff members of ICAR-CIFRI.
