Thirty thousand fish seeds were released by ICAR-CIFRI in the river Ganga, at Prayagraj

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Prayagraj, on 15 November 2021, released 30,000 (thirty thousand) Indian Major Carp (IMC)- Catla, Rohu, and Mrigal fishes under the ranching program on the confluence of holy Ganga and Yamuna, keeping in mind the conservation and promotion of fish species that are becoming extinct in the Ganga river. The program was organized under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) project. Dr. D.N. Jha, the center head of the institute welcomed the people present and told them about the river Ganga in brief. Dr. Basant Kumar Das, the director, and guest of the institute informed the gathering about the Namami Gange (NMCG) project and informed about the biodiversity and cleanliness of Ganga under which the seeds of important fish species, which are declining in the entire Ganga river have been ranching. The chief guest of the program, Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, while addressing the function, explained the importance of fishing and ranching in the river Ganga and ways to increase the livelihood of fishermen and to encourage fishermen distributed 20 cast nets among fishermen. Smt. Kavita Tripathi, a social worker, participated in the program as a special guest and told the importance of Ganga. She called upon the people present to keep Ganga clean and save biodiversity. She released the bulletins, booklets, and leaflets published by the institute. On this occasion, Shri Rajesh Sharma, Convenor Ganga Vichar Manch, and National Mission for Clean Ganga administered oath to all to keep Ganga clean. The pilgrims, fishermen, and locals who came to take bath and their regular activities in the river Ganga also kept their views in the meeting and everyone expressed their resolve to keep the Ganges clean as well as being aware of the Ganga. The program was attended by Ganga Vichar Manch, Wildlife Institute of India, Ganga Prahari, Ganga Task Force, pilgrims, fishermen from nearby villages, fish traders, and local people living on the banks of Ganga. At the end of the program, Dr. Absar Alam, Scientist, while expressing his vote of thanks, assured that with the participation of the society for successfully achieving the objectives of this project. Dr. Shravan Kumar Sharma, Scientist of the institute managed in releasing institute publications on this occasion. Dr. Venkatesh Thakur, Scientist, managed the fish for ranching. Dr. Jeetendra Kumar, Scientist and other officers, research scholars, etc. participated in the program and addressed the gathering.
