CIFRI Awards
ICAR-CIFRI extends its support to the fishermen belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities for their livelihood improvement through imparting knowledge and distribution of fisheries inputs. CIFRI HDPE Pen, CIFRI Cage Grow Feed, fish seed was distributed in various reservoirs of Jharkhand under SCSP and STC programme. CIFRI has given 32 nos. of pens to the SC and ST fishers of 17 reservoirs situated in 13 nos. of blocks across 5 districts (Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Lohardagga, Simdega, Khunti) of Jharkhand. Out of these 17 reservoirs, 8 reservoirs namely Karanji, Lotwa, Nandini, Baimari, Kansjor, Ramrekha, Kelaghag and Larbahave ,Chandlaso been covered under STC and 9 reservoirs namely Perkha, Bonda, Keredari, Ghaghra, Jarahiya, Kanke, Hatia and Getalsud have been covered under SCSP programme. These pens have been maintained and managed by the fishermen’s cooperatives associated with the respective reservoirs. This extensive programme has been designed to harness 350 tonnes more production from the seventeen reservoirs. It will not only help the fishers to get more income, but also it will be a significant contribution to the protein food basket of Jharkhand.
ICAR-CIFRI has also initiated backyard ornamental fish culture to empower the SC and ST women folks. Women of these vulnerable communities will be abled to get an alternative income from backyard ornamental fisheries.
Moreover, ICAR-CIFRI has planned to introduce Puntius sarana model in the reservoirs of Jharkhand to popularise the concept of ‘Nutri-fish’. On 17th November, 2021 Dr. B. K. Das, Director, CIFRI graced the input distribution programme in Ranchi and he assured the fish farmers of Jharkhand that CIFRI will be handholding them for their livelihood improvement in the coming days. Dr. H. N. Dwivedi, Director Fisheries, Govt. of Jharkhand also has joined hands with CIFRI in this endeavour. Dr. B.K Das, Director CIFRI along with a team of scientists and technical officers visited the penculture site at Getalsud reservoir to demonstrate the penculture operation and also did stocking in the pen. It has been assumed that this support programme would help the SC and ST fishers of Jharkhand to upscale their livelihood in a sustainable way. The whole programme was well coordinated by a team of CIFRI scientists including Dr. A.K. Das, Dr. Aparna Roy, Dr. P.K. Parida and Dr. Raju Baitha.
