Regional Workshop on ‘Open water fisheries enhancement of Northeast Region of India’ organized by ICAR-CIFRI

ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore organized an interactive regional workshop on ‘Open water fisheries enhancement of Northeast Region of India’on virtual mode on 20 December 2021. The major objectives of this workshop wereto apprise the state Department of Fisheries about the open water fisheries management guidelines/ technologies developed by ICAR-CIFRI;to understand research support requirements and to explore collaborative work programmes.
Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Head (Actg.)ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati & PI of NEH project,welcomed the participants and explained the background of the workshop. Dr. B.K. Das, Director & Coordinator of NEH project in his address discussed in detail about the recent interventions and activities carried out by ICAR-CIFRI in the North Eastern states of India. Prof. Ratan Saha, Dean, College of Fisheries, CAU Lembucherra and Prof. Binod Kalita, Dean, College of Fisheries, AAU Raha briefed about their activities in the region and the future needs of inland fisheries.
Directors of Fisheries of NE states and their representatives from Assam (Dr. Bhagaban Kalita, Dr. R.C. Barman, Mr. Anupam Sharma), Arunachal Pradesh (Mr. N. Pusang, Dr. N. C. Tok), Manipur (Mr. Balkrishna), Meghalaya (Mr. Kharbukhi and David), Mizoram (Mr. Zohmingthanga), Nagaland (Mr. Neithoo Kuotsu), Sikkim (Mr. Jaswant N.) and Tripura (Dr. Samir Malla) explained status of inland fisheries and expectations from ICAR-CIFRI. Mr. P. Barkataki, ACS, Managing Director, ADFC Ltd urged ICAR-CIFRI for capacity building of fishers on beel fisheries management. 80 participants attended this regional workshop
Some of major areas identified during the discussion were: lack of trained manpower for sustainable utilization and management of inland fisheries, lack of updated database for inland fisheries resources of NE states, suitable species, optimum stocking density and other culture parameters for enclosure culture of fishes in beels and reservoirs, lack of guidelines of riverine fisheries improvement and ranching in rivers and threat of exotics in the open water bodies. Dr. B.K. Das, Director assured all possible research, development and extension support. Dr. Arun Pandit, Principal Scientist & Coordinator of the workshop thanked all the participants for a fruitful discussion. Dr. Dipesh Debnath, Sr. Scientist & Co-Coordinator of the workshop assisted in organizing the workshop from ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati.
