Sensitization programme and distribution of fishing implements by ICAR-CIFRI, Bangalore at Gayathri reservoir, Karnataka under SC-SP programme
Regional Centre of ICAR-CIFRI, Bangalore conducted a sensitization programme on fisheries development in reservoirs and distributed fiberglass fishing coracles to ten active fishers of schedule caste community at Gayathri reservoir in Chitradurga, Karnataka on 22nd December 2021, as a part of the Schedule Cast- Sub Plan (SC-SP) programme. Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Principal Scientist and Head, welcomed the state officials and the participants and explained the activities of the centre and made the fishers aware about the SC-Sub Plan initiated by the centre for improving livelihood of the fishers. The programme was presided by Mr. J Umesha, Joint Director of Fisheries, Shivamogga, Karnataka who thanked ICAR-CIFRI for the support rendered for the livelihood development of SC fishers and requested ICAR-CIFRI for continued support. Mr. Srinivas D. S., Sr. Asst Director of Fisheries, Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Karnataka also spoke on the occasion. The sensitization programme was attended by 45 active fishers of the Gayatri reservoir and Vanivilasasagar fishermen cooperative Society, Chitradurga. Further, the programme also involved discussion on various aspects such as fishery development and management, development of reservoir crafts and gears, policies, women empowerment, etc. The fishers actively interacted in the discussion and expressed their views on various aspects of developmental activities for enhancing fish production from the reservoirs. Dr. Vijaykumar delivered the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR- CIFRI, Barrackpore for the support and also appreciated the help extended by the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Karnataka for providing the local logistics in organising the programme. The programme was successfully convened and organised by Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Principal Scientist and Head, Dr. Ajoy Saha, Scientist and Dr. Vijaykumar M.E, Technical Officer of the Regional Centre.
