Enclosure culture systems have tremendous potential in augmenting fish production from Indian reservoirs (3.51 million ha) and wetlands (0.5 million ha) owing to the magnitude of the resources. The Institute has standardized and demonstrated the cage technology for inland open waters leading to wide spread adoption by more than 16 states in the country in ‘Mission Mode’ through various schemes of Govt. of India and State Govts. Cages can be used for raising (in situ) fish fingerlings as well as producing of table fishes, reducing dependency on land based farming besides improving per unit fish productivity and production from reservoirs and wetlands. However, there is lack of trained manpower to successfully implement this technology to harness the potential and also to impart training to the stakeholders. In this back drop, ICAR-CIFRI was organised NFDB sponsored Training program on ‘’Hands on training for building capacity of fishers on freshwater Cage Culture in inland open waters’’ during 15-17 Dec, 2021. Inaugurating the program, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI imbibed the trainees highlighting the status, potential and issues pertaining to cage culture in India in the context of doubling farmer’s income. The trainees should utilize the training periods in gathering knowledge and skills besides in disseminating the same to the actual stake holders-he urged. Dr. M. A. Hassan, Head, FEM Division and Dr. A. K. Das, In-Charge, T&E Cell welcomed the trainees to the training programme, being attended by 50 participants comprising farmers, entrepreneurs, youths working in fisheries sector of West Bengal. The trainees were exposed to on-field demonstration of cage culture at Mainthon reservoir Jharkhand besides in-house lectuers on various aspects of cage culture. Speaking on valedictory program, Shri Srikanta Mahato Ji, Hon’ble MoS, MSME, Govt of West Bengal has invoked the trainees to utilize the knowledge and skills gained during the program in their future course of endeavour. He also distributed the certificates to the trainees. The training programme was well co-ordinated by Dr. M. A. Hassan, Head, FEM Division and Dr. A. K. Das, I/C, T&E Cell of the Institute.
