Attracting and Retaining Youths in Agriculture through Training at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore
ICAR-CIFRI has been addressing in a focused manner through training & extension to Attract & Retain Youths in Agriculture (ARYA) during a 5-days training programme (27-31 Dec, 2021) on “Inland Fisheries Development” for the farmers of Bhagalpur, Bihar sponsored by KVK, Sabour, Bhagalpur, where a total of 34 farmers, mostly youths participated. The programme has been designed based on the need of fishermen and fish farmers of Bhagalpur as Bhagalpur has vast range of perennial and seasonal ponds, reservoirs, canals including mauns & chaurs of Gangetic basin giving the district ample scope of livelihood improvement through development of inland fisheries. ICAR-CIFRI aimed at bridging up the gap in knowledge, skill and attitude of the farmers towards inland fisheries management. Inaugurating the programme, Dr. B.K Das, Director, CIFRI urged the youths to be active in this field of fisheries and aquaculture which has already been proved to be most potent sector under agricultural arena in India targeting towards doubling farmers income by 2025 onwards. The vast and varied inland fisheries resources of the district should be properly explored through knowledge and skill development on various facets of inland fisheries management for ensuring sustainable livelihood – Dr Das emphasized. He also spoke about the entrepreneurial opportunities in fisheries which can be harnessed with better marketing and business skills. The programme consisted of three days of in-house lectures along with hands on training sessions and two days of field exposure visits in East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), pen culture site at floodplain wetlands, ICAR-CIFA field station, Kalyani including progressive fishers’ nurseries at Balagarh, Hooghly. The training programme contained sessions on various aspects of inland fisheries management viz, water and soil chemistry, induced breeding of fish, fish health management, wetland management, ornamental fish culture, cage culture, fish feed preparation, Recirculatory culture system for cage stock production, fish marketing etc. The programme was initiated with need assessment of the trainees with the help of knowledge test and to end with collection of feedback from them for improvement of future training programs of the Institute. Dr S. Dam Roy, former Director of ICAR-CARI and In-charge, Kolkata Centre of CIFRI has distributed the certificate to the trainees. The programme was coordinated by Dr. A.K Das, I/C E & T Cell and co-coordinated by Shri Satish Koushlesh, Scientist, RWF Division.
