Interface Meeting on “Encouraging Fish Culture Technologies in Large Waterbodies with Special Emphasis on Enclosure Culture in Andhra Pradesh” organised at ICAR-CIFRI

Dr (Smt) Poonam Malakondaiah, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, Agriculture and Cooperation, AHDD & Fisheries, Govt of Andhra Pradeshalong with Shri K. Kanna Babu, IAS, Commissioner of Fisheries, Govt of Andhra Pradesh visited ICAR-CIFRI on 8 January 2022. They visited institute facilities and laboratories and interacted with Director and all staff members.
An Interface meeting on "Encouraging fish culture technologies in large water bodies with special emphasis on enclosure culture in Andhra Pradesh" held at the institute where senior officers of Andhra Pradesh govt and ICAR-CIFRI participated.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director welcomed chief guest Dr (Smt) Poonam Malakondaiah, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, and guest of honour Shri K. Kanna Babu, IAS, Commissioner of Fisheries, Govt of Andhra Pradesh and briefed them about the activities and achievement of ICAR-CIFRI. He also urged the need for converting the unscientific to scientific method of fish production and to develop entrepreneurship-basedmodel for aquaculture.
Special Chief Secretary, Dr.Poonam Malakondaiah, IAS summarized the state activities and ventures fisheries sector such as Farmer field schools in collaboration with state universities and the establishment of a Fisheries University at West Godavari District. She pointed out two major areas of concern for fisheries in Andhra Pradesh, viz., training of farmers on sustainable practices and focusing on the quality of produce rather than quantity.
Sri. K. Kanna Babu, IAS, Commissioner stressed on the possibility of partnership with CIFRI in future for promoting cage culture in reservoirs of Andhra Pradesh. He sought assistance in ornamental fish culture and ways to reduce mortality in live fish transport. He expressed his concern regarding low domestic consumption of fishes in Andhra Pradesh even though the state leads in aquacultutreproduction.
Dr. B.K. Das gave presentation on inland fisheries resources of India and the research activities conducted by CIFRI in various water bodies of India. He focused on the importance of cage culture and production enhancement programmes as well as their potential in Indian reservoirs.He stressed that Andhra Pradesh has an estimated production potential of 7449 t and 4411tin large and medium reservoir respectively with the adoption of culture-based fisheries management. He explained the guidelines for cage culture and their installation in reservoirs and also discussed the CIFRI GI cage, CIFRI Cagegrow feed and CIFRI Pen HDPE. He also gave information for diversification of species and the promising candidate species in cage culture.He assured that CIFRI will provide all technical support to Govt. of Andhra Pradesh in making value chain development including production enhancement.
Dr.Poonam Malakondaiah, Special Chief Secretary stressed on long and sustainable partnership with ICAR-CIFRI for the development of Inland fisheries sector in Andhra Pradesh. The meeting ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. U.K. Sarkar, HOD, RWF Division.
