Input Distribution and mass awareness program on Hill Fisheries Development at Kalimpongand Darjeeling District of West Bengal
ICAR-CIFRI has started a new intervention for hill fisheries development for up-scaling of the socio-economic condition of the SC/ST communitythrough the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) / Schedule tribe component (STC)programme.Under this initiative, ICAR-CIFRI has organized two mass awareness cum input distribution programme for the rural SC fishers to improve their livelihoods at Kalimpong and Darjeeling district during 29th and 30th December, 2021 under the leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. In Kalimpong district 50 fishers from Pemling and Gidang villages (Kalimpong block) were distributed with 70 kg of fish feed and fingerlings (120 numbers) to each fish farmers on 29th December. Dr. Das has encouraged the farmers to culture the cold-water fish species which can grow better in low temperature. Another mass awareness programme was organized at Mirikin Darjeeling district in which 50 fishers from Manju Dara Gaon, Manju Gauri Gaon, Lepcha villa, Amalbotey, Soureni busty, Bungkulung (Mirik block), Gopaldhara village (Sukhia block) were attended on 30th December. All fishers have their own small pond but they could not culture scientifically. ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore distributed 12000 Nos. of Amur Carp and grass carp fingerlings and 7000 Kgs feed among 100 fish farmers. Dr. B.K. Das encouraged the fish farmers for the fish farming and also mentioned about the scope and importance of fisheries for sustainable livelihood development in hill areas.The farmers have cleared their doubts on scientific fish farming and the other difficulties faced by them. Director, ICAR-CIFRI assured the fish farmers all kind of technical support from ICAR-CIFRI. The programme was coordinated by Dr. P.K. Parida, Dr. A. K. Das and Ms. Shreya Bhattacharya.
