ICAR-CIFRI organized Webinar on “Impact of anthropogenic interferences in river ecosystem and fisheries”

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized one day Webinar on “Impact of anthropogenic interferences in river ecosystem and fisheries” sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad on 17th Feb 2022. The programme was organized with keeping an objective on development of scientific based policy towards river restoration and rejuvenation for sustainable ecosystem and fisheries. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, CIFRI welcomed the delegates and invited speakers from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Central Water Commission (CWC) and CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), Ministry of Jal Shakti, New Delhi, official from State Fisheries Department, Researchers from Various colleges and Universities. Dr. Das stressed on the present fish diversity in river Ganga and major activities undertaken by ICAR-CIFRI towards fish species conservation and restoration. Dr. S. Karketta, Advisor, MoEFCC graced the occasion by delivering a lecture on River valley projects towards biodiversity conservation. Dr. Karketta highlighted the role of Biodiversity conservation under Sustainable Goal-15 and urged for the collective science based policy development for sustainable fisheries and ecosystem. Dr. N.N Rai, Director, CWC gave an enlightening talk on role of dams and barrages towards altering river hydrology with major focus on environmental flows towards river ecosystem and biodiversity conservation. Dr. Sandeep Kumar Behera, Biodiversity consultant, NMCG gave an overview of various threats associated with the Ganga river system and the mission mode initiative by NMCG to restore the riverine stretches of Ganga. Dr. Behera appreciated the CIFRI activities under NMCG and stressed on the monitoring activities by the involvement of local stake holders. Dr. Hemant Bherwani, Scientist NEERI highlighted on two technologies developed by NEERI towards Improvement of degraded river and lake ecosystems through Restoration of Nallah with Ecological Units (RENEU) and Phytorid technology based on natural bioremediation. DR. Hemant showed that these two technologies have been working well in the field condition particularly in river Ganga. Dr. S. Samanta, Head, REF Division of ICAR-CIFRI delivered a lecture on Anthropogenic interference in Indian rivers which stressed on the various research works conducted by the ICAR-CIFRI. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. R.K. Manna, Pr. Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI. More than 100 persons were participated in the programme. The webinar was organised under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das.
