Report on training programme for cage fishers of Dumbur reservoir organized during Feb. 15-17, 2022 at Gandacherra, Dhalai district, Tripura

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with the Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura organized a training programme on ‘Cage culture technology for enhancing reservoir productivity’ during Feb. 15-17, 2022 at Gandacherra Superintendent of Fisheries Office. The training programme was inaugurated by Shri Dhananjay Tripura, Hon'ble MLA, Tripura on 15th Feb., 2022. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati addressed the participants on online mode. A total of 50 fishers dependent on Dumbur reservoir participated in the training programme. Technical aspects of cage aquaculture in reservoir were dealt with by scientists of ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati, namely, Dr. Dipesh Debnath, Dr. S.C.S. Das and Shri A.K. Yadav during three-days of discussion. Fishery Officers of Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura, namely, Shri Madan Tripura, SF; Shri Timothy Sangma, FO, Shri Ratnadeep Saha, FO discussed about Department’s cage culture initiatives in Dumbur reservoir. It was emphasized during the interaction that cage culture is an intensive aquaculture system where growth of fish is mainly dependent on quality and quantity of feed inputs, stocking density and regular monitoring of water quality. ICAR-CIFRI as a technology partner initiated cage culture experiments in Dumbur reservoir since 2020-21 in active collaboration with Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura for improving livelihoods of reservoir fishers. Shri D. K. Chakma, TCS, Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura has shown keen interest in successfully implementing cage culture in Dumbur reservoir with the expertise and guidance of ICAR-CIFRI.
Technical deliberations of Day 1 and 2 consisted of prospects of cage culture in Dumbur reservoir, basic aspects of cage culture in inland waterbodies (Dr. D. Debnath), site and species selection for cage culture (Dr. S.C.S. Das), feeds and feeding management in cage culture (Dr. D. Debnath), importance of monitoring fish, water and cage nets (Dr. S.C.S. Das), fish diseases in cage culture and their prevention, diagnosis and treatment (S.C. S. Das) and economic aspects of cage culture in reservoirs (Shri A.K. Yadav). On the Day 3, a field visit was organized to cage culture site in Narikel Kunja part of Dumbur reservoir. During the field visit, fishers were demonstrated packaging of fish seed for transportation and stocking in cages installed in the reservoir. Stocking programme was graced by senior officers of the Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura namely Shri N.G. Noatia, DDF & Nodal Officer-NEH, Ms. Dipmala Roy, SF and Manoj Paul, Junior Engineer.
