CIFRI establish the First ornamental cottage enterprise in Tribal villages of Jamshedpur and Bokaro

The ornamental fish industry gives a great alternative livelihood opportunity to the rural people as well as the women of tribal villages. Jamshedpur city of Jharkhand has approx. 64 retail and wholesale ornamental fish shops depending on the supply of ornamental fishes from Kolkata market, West Bengal. To sustain the ornamental industry from production to marketing ICAR-CIFRI in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Jharkhand, initiated ornamental fisheries backyard units for rural empowerment and livelihood development of tribal women of Jamsedpur and Bokaro, Jharkhand. Presently DoF, Govt. of Jharkhand identified 25 tribal women from rural villages i.e. Punsa, Naga, and Shiling villages of East Shinghbhum, Jamshedpur, and 15 tribal women from Keshridi village of Bokaro. The training was held at the district headquarter supported by the District Fisheries Officer Perisetti Bhargavi. First Mrs. Bhargavi welcome the delegates and the tribal fisherwomen and briefed them about their interest to the tribal women to carry out the ornamental farming. With the leardership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, initially, CIFRI distributed inputs for the ornamental unit establishment where CIFRI contributes approx. Rs. 15,000/person including 400L fiber tank, fish seed, fish feed, aerator, and accessories. After distribution, the institute has also organized training and hands-on demonstration for all women beneficiaries in both places. Dr. B. K. Das Director, ICAR-CIFRI addressed the tribal women for their livelihood upliftment through the ornamental fisheries sector. He also emphasizes the prospects and opportunities of the ornamental fish industry and the marketing channel and needs step by step hand holding to make them viable and able to establish theeemselves independently to bring entrepreneurship in coming days. Dr. A. K. Das, Principal Scientist, and Dr. Raju Baitha, Scientist also give them views on the ornamental fish culture, marketing, and encourage for empowering themselves thorugh ornamental fishreis sector. Dr. Shreya Bhattacharya gives a live demonstration of the ornamnmetal fish culture taking Molly and Swordtail as model fishes. The programme was conducted on 18th at Jamshedpur and 19th at Bokaro. Tribal women during the discussion and live demonstration expressed their doubts related to the fish rearing and marketing issues. The problems were discussed at length with local traders and the channel of marketing was established with the help of local wholesalers. The efforts taken by the CIFRI for the first time in these two districts of Jharkhand will immensely help the envisaged vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and can boost the rural economy in the long run as well as the target given by the PMMSY.
