Knowledge and skill up-gradation to fish farmers of Katihar, Bihar through training at ICAR-CIFRI for livelihood security
Katihar, Bihar is adorned with diverged inland fishery resources – mauns, chaurs, canals and rivulets. Even with abundant aquatic resources, the supply of adequate fish is short of demand in this district. Noticing the knowledge gap in regard to scientific fish farming and fisheries enhancement in this district, a 7 days training programme on “Inland Fisheries Management” has been framed at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during 15-21 Feb, 2022 as a part of capacity building and knowledge up-gradation programme targeting the fishers’ income double. A total of 31 active fish farmers participated in this programme. Inaugurating the programme, Dr. B.K. Das, Director of the Institute stressed upon the need of skill development of the fish farmers on various aspects of inland fisheries management ensuring their sustainable livelihood security. He also imbibed the fishers to explore their available resources for optimum productions and productivity by gaining scientific knowledge inputs and their applications.
The farmers were exposed to both in-house theoretical and on-field practical demonstration along with exposing them to different aspects of inland fisheries management, including pond construction and management, soil and water quality management, feed and feeding protocol including natural food, ornamental fish farming, breeding aspects of fishes, nutritional requirements, fish health management, enclosure culture, economic aspects of different fish culture activities, fish marketing, overview on Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojona, etc. The field exposure visits included: ICAR-CIFA Kalyani fish farms, Khamargachi and Balagarh progressive fish farms, East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), ornamental fish markets, etc. Re-circulatory Aquaculture System (RAS), Bio-floc units, ornamental hatchery units and feed mill of the Institute were made available to them as well as provided hands-on training on different need-based aspects like basic water quality parameters, fish feed preparation using locally available feed ingredients, identification of biotic organisms and fish pathogens and their respective remedial measures, etc.
The trainees were evaluated both pre- and post-session feedback which was marked with overall satisfaction of the trainees admitting their up-scaling of skills and knowledge which would be applied in their respective water resources. The Head of Divisions in their valedictory remarks invoked the farmers to apply the knowledge gained from this training to consolidate more productions from their respective water resources. The training programme was successfully coordinated by Dr. A K. Das, In-charge, Extension & Training Cell, and co-coordinated by Mr. P. Mishal, and Mr. W.
