Hill Fisheries Development: a new initiative to strengthen the livelihoods of Hill Fishers by ICAR-CIFRI
The small and marginal fish farmers of the hilly region own tiny backyard ponds. Due to lack of technical support and basic knowledge on fish farming, they produce a meager amount of fish from their ponds. To improve their livelihoods by providing technical support for enhancing the fish production from these ponds, a training program on “Inland Fisheries Management with Special reference to Hill Fisheries Development” was organized by ICAR-CIFRI under SCSP. The training programme was inaugurated by the Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 22nd of February and the porgramme will continue till 26th of February, 2022. A total of 20 trainees from Mirik Block of Darjeeling Districts of West Bengal were participated in this 5-day training program, among them 2 were ladies. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI has interacted with the farmers and informed them to take the full benefit of training and also encouraged them to discuss their various issues in fish farming with the scientists of ICAR-CIFRI. He also provided scientific advice to the queries of a few trainees.
Prior to this training, an initial field visit and discussion with the hill fish farmers were held at Mirik by a team of ICAR-CIFRI led by Dr. B. K. Das, Director. He informed the fishers about the scientific way of fish culture in the mid-altitude hilly region. Also, the fish seeds of Amur carp and Grass carp and fish feed were distributed to 100 fish farmers during that program. As the farmers are facing problems for pisciculture due to a lack of basic knowledge on suitable aquaculture practices for colder hilly regions. In this training, they will be taught on various aspects of hill fisheries development such as the scope of integrated development for hill fisheries, Fish breeding of Amur carp, common carp, grass carp, common diseases in fish culture and the treatments, fish feed management and preparation, inland fish management in the hilly region, natural fish foods and their importance and culture and management of ornamental fishes. Also, they will be exposed to the facilities of ICAR-CIFRI such as hatchery, ornamental breeding, fish feed, and bio-floc unit. Dr. A. K. Das and Dr. A. Roy were also present in the inauguration training programme and interacted with the fish farmers. This training program is coordinated by Dr. P.K. Parida, Dr. Lianthumluaia, Mrs. P.R.
