CIFRI Awards
Under the Govt. of India’s Schedlue Tribe Componnet, ICAR-CIFRI undertook reservoir production enahncment programme in a participataroy mode invloving Department of Fisheries, Chhatishgarh, Coopoeraive society of the resorvoir at 10 reservoirs dominated and managed by tribal community. Under the leadership of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI it was decided to provide, 2 nos of pen, boat with engine and 2 tons of fish feed for the penculture in the reservoir for insitu rasing of fish seed to be stocked in the reservoirs. Due to pendamic COVID situationa and to speed up the process a virtual meeting was organised to dicuss the plan of action. The meeting was attanded by Shri N. S. Nag, Director of Fisheries, Chhattisgarh; twelve State Fisheries Department Officers (ADF, Fisheries); and the members of ten numbers of Primary Fishermen Co-operative Societies (PFCS) of Chhattisgarh. Dr. B. K. Das greeted the participants and narrated the importance of pen culture in improving fish production levels and productivity of inland open waters of Chhattisgarh. He remarked that twenty model pen demonstrations will be carried out in 10 different reservoirs of Chhattisgarh with CIFRI’s intervention for the first time. Similar interventions were carried out by ICAR – CIFRI in Jharkhand where reservoir productivity levels have increased. Dr. B. K Das, Director, CIFRI and Shri N. S. Nag, Director of Fisheries, Chhattisgarh both agreed upon the matter that PFCS members have a greater role to play in the planned activities of pen culture to be installed in the state.
Installation of pen culture technology will enhance an additional 200 ton fish production from these reservoir. It is anticipated that, the pen culture system of raising fingerlings would be a model with participatory approach for inland fishers in amalgamation with economic enterprises such as NABARD and Banks and it will reduce the transportaion moratlity and no-avilability of desired fingerlings, which is a major constraint to increase the reserovir production. The Puntius sarana model can be implemented for stocking along with IMC, as it is an auto breeder and it can established in the system. Dr. Das also advised the PFCS members to start their ventures with a revolving fund with which they can sustain their financial activities on their own. Shri N. S. Nag, Director of Fisheries, Chhattisgarh, convened in the meeting that they are ready for pen installation in the inland openwater bodies and to provide logistic support to ICAR-CIFRI in this planned activities. There were interactions between members of PFCS, ADFs of the State Department and Scientists of ICAR – CIFRI about pen culture management practices that would be followed in the State. From ICAR-CIFRI a team scientists including Dr. A. K. Das, Dr. Aparna Roy, Dr. P. K Parida, Dr. Liamthuamluaia, Dr. Satish Koushlesh, Dr. Piyasi Debroy were present in the meeting.
