ICAR-CIFRI organized an seminar on hybrid mode to celebrate the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March, 2022 on the theme of “Gender Equity for a Sustainable Tomorrow: Special Reference to Inland Fisheries” which is also the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day. Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, also the convener of the programme delivered the welcome address. He extended his warm welcome to the attendees and gave floral welcome to the honorable guests. He addressed the audience by mentioning the scenario of gender equity in CIFRI itself and informed about the role of the women professionals working at the institute in shaping the inland fisheries sector. He also highlighted the role of fisherwomen in the inland fisheries especially in the form of collector of SIFs and its role in providing nutritional security and discussed about encouraging the rural women to involve in the fisheries through community participation in a participatory approach. He also mentioned about CIFRI’s role in empowerment of women in the form of encouraging their involvement in canal fisheries or fisheries based in rain-fed pond and also through SHGs.
Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi Saxena, President, Indian Science Congress Association, graced the programme as the honored Chief Guest. She shared that in spite of the changes in the socio-economic position of women are still impaired with various social oppressions that deters them from achieving the coveted equity. She voiced her concern against the commoditization of women in popular media and position of India in covering the gender gap with reference to the “Gender Gap report, 2021” by the World economic forum and role of education in achieving gender equity. Prof. Baskaram Manimaran, Former VC,TN Dr. Jaylalitha Fisheries University and Chairman, RAC was also present in today’s programme and he said that women should be empowered to ensure development of the society itself and also lauded CIFRI for its transparent operation of Women’s cell to provide the women staffs a fair ground. Dr. S. K. Jain, Member RAC started his speech with a beautiful quote stating “the earth smiles when the women smile” that truly enraptures the role of women in building a society that provides equality in terms of rights and is socially just and also mentioned how achieving gender equity would benefit our country economically. Dr. (Smt.) Leela Edwin Director (Acting) ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology and Prof. Suhrita Chakrabarty (Das), Professor and HOD, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya were the invited guest of honours. Dr. Edwin delivered a very enriching lecture through a well crafted presentation where she highlighted the role of CIFT in introducing various technologies for ensuring better participation of women in fisheries and allied sectors that could mitigate the gradual displacement of women from the fisheries due to rigorous mechanization and other constraints. She suggested requirement of training and skill development for enabling the women to make them competent and also small scale aquaculture as a potential way out. Vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Paushali Mukharjee, Assistant Administrative Officer, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute. Coordinators of the programme Dr. Aparna Roy, Dr. Suman Kumari executed the programme very graciously. A total of 114 participants participated in online or offline mode. Overall the programme achieved its purpose of highlighting the relevance of gender equity for achieving sustainability and is expected to inspire the women to shine in all their future endeavors.
