ICAR-CIFRI initiates cage culture in Doyang Reservoir, Wokha, Nagaland: A step towards improving livelihood of tribal fishers
Guwahati 19th October, 2022
Doyang (26°13’10" N and 94°17’90" E) is a medium reservoir (2258 ha) located in Wokha district of Nagaland and is a potential fishery resource for augmenting fish production in the hilly north-eastern state. Fish catch in the reservoir is mainly contributed by stocked fishes (80-90 %) comprising Indian major carps (Catla, Rohu, Mrigal) and exotic carps (Common carp, Silver carp). The reservoir is being managed by Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources (DoF&AR), Nagaland. Total fish production from the reservoir was 358 tonnes during 2016-17. More than 250 fisher families including 100 full-time fishers depend on the reservoir for their livelihood. However, fish yield rate in the reservoir is slightly on the lower side (157.2-158.5 kg ha-1 yr-1).

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore initiated culture of Pangas (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) in cages installed in Doyang reservoir in collaboration with the DoF&AR, Nagaland. Cage culture trial in the reservoir has been initiated for popularizing this technology among reservoir fishers of the state, for increasing fish production as well as improving livelihood and income of tribal fishers. The program was initiated by ICAR-CIFRI under the leadership of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. A total of 21,600 fingerlings of Pangas, Common carp and Silver barb were stocked in ten cages each having dimension of 6m x 4m x 4m (L x B x D) on 19th October, 2022.

ICAR-CIFRI also provided 6 tons of CIFRI CageGrow floating feed (28% CP) and the net cages to local tribal fishers of the reservoir for conducting the cage culture trial along with required technical support. Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati & Principal Investigator of NEH Project planned the activities duly supported by Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist in implementation.

An awareness programme was also conducted on cage culture technology on the occasion of fish seed stocking in cages on 19th October, 2022. for 23 participants with on-field supervision of Dr. Shyamal Chandra Sukla Das, Senior Scientist and Dr. Simanku Borah, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with officials of DoF&AR, Nagaland (Mr. Rulanthung Ezung, District Fishery Officer, Mr. E. Mhonthung Lotha and Mr. Konrhi Magh, Assistant Fishery Inspectors).
