CIFRI celebrated "Tribal Pride Day" at the remote corner of Sundarbans

Indian freedom fighters, ICAR-CIFRI reached to the remote villages of Sundarbans of West Bengal on 15^th November, 2022. On this occasion, Dr. B. K. Das, Director along with his team comprising scientist, technical staff and research scholar organized a mass awareness – cum- input distribution programme under Scheduled Tribe Component in the village of Palotghat, Kakdwip.The programme was started with traditional tribal dance "Dhamsa" , performed by the group of local tribal women folk as a tribute to Birsa Mundawho was also a son of a tribal family. Dr. B. K. Das, Director ,CIFRI paid tribute to Birsa Munda with flowers and by lighting the lamp. In in his address, Dr. Das pointed out the significance of scientific fish farming in respect of livelihood security of the fishing community. He also gave assurance to the local tribal fishermen to extend all kinds of technical support to them for enhancing fish production, which will ultimately help them to improve their livelihoods.

On this day, Dr. Das distributed 750 kg fish seed, 15 tonnes fish feed and 3 tonnes lime to 150 number of tribal families. The overall programme was conceptualized and conducted by CIFRI in collaboration of a local NGO named as Sagar Krishnanagar Swami Vivekananda Youth Cultural Society. In totality, the programme imbibed the local tribal fishermen with lots of motivation for scientific fish farming towards livelihood improvement.
