CIFRI in 108th Indian Science Congress held at RTM Nagpur University
Nagpur, 7th January, 2023
108th Indian Science Congress with the theme Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with Women Empowerment was held at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur from 3-7 January 2023.
Inaugural session
Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the 108th Indian Science Congress on 3rd January 2023. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted the role of India’s scientific strength in India’s story of development over the next 25 years. “When the spirit of national service gets infused in Science along with passion, results are unprecedented.

I am sure, India’s scientific community will ensure a place for our country of which it was always deserving ”, he said. He stressed, “Our thinking is not just that we should empower women via science but also empowering science by the contribution of women.”“Increasing participation of women is proof that women and science are both progressing in the nation”. Prime Minister said, “Efforts of science can turn into great achievements only when they come out of the lab and reach the land, and their impact reaches from global to grassroots, when its ambit is from journal to jameen (land, everyday life) and when change is visible from research to real life.” Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI as Executive committee member of Indian science Congress Association was on the dais with other guest and dignitaries during the inaugural session.
Animal Veterinary and Fisheries Science section
Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI was conferred with G. K. Manna award on 4th January 2023 in the inaugural session of Animal Veterinary and Fisheries Science section. He delivered the G K Manna award memorial lecture showing his work and achievement of last 25 years as scientist. Dr. B. K. Das, also chaired the session of foreign invited lectures by two eminent speakers Dr. Kini, National University of Singapore and Dr. Shamsi, Charles Stuart University, Australia on 4th January 2023.
On 5th January 2023, Dr. B. K. Das delivered Invited lecture on the topic “Sustainable development of inland fisheries for food security in India: Technologies, status, potentials, issues and challenges
On 6th January 2023, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI was the Guest of Honour of the valedictory session of the section.
Farmer Science Congress
Farmers Science Congress was inaugurated on 5th January 2023. Dr. B. K. Das, Director was the chief guest of the event. In his address as chief guest, Dr. Basant Kumar Das said “The nation has made tremendous progress in food grain production and our farmers’ meticulous efforts have made the biggest contribution to it, However, it is seen that the economic condition of the farmers has not improved much. Hence effective use of modern science and technology is important for the progress of agriculture”. He asserted that farmers need to be aware of market techniques. Dr. Archan Kanti Das, Principal Scientist Moderated the technical session of Farmers Science Congress.
Plenary Session on Sustainable Fisheries, Aquaculture and Climate Change
On 5th January plenary session on Sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and climate change was organised under the chairmanship of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. Dr. J. K. Jena, DDG (Fisheries Science), ICAR presented on the topic “Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture: Impact of climate change and mitigation measures”. Dr. B. K. Das presented on the topic “Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture for sustainable development goals and women empowerment”.
Science Communicators Meet
14th Science Communicators meet (Vigyan Sancharak Sammelan) was held on 5-6 January 2023 at the 108th Indian Science Congress. The meet was inaugurated by Dr. Atul Vaidya, Director, CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur.

ICAR-CIFRI was represented by Ganesh Chandra as invited speaker. He presented his research on “Communication for Sustainable Inland Fisheries Development”. He stressed that communicators should consider 1) using consultations and focussed group communication 2)using multiple channels for technologies/practices with yield visibility. (for effective communication strategy). Effective communication to fishers’ community on improved technologies will ultimately result in the sustainable growth in the fisheries sector and help in SDG goals to eradicate poverty and end hunger. ICAR-CIFRI was represented at the 108th Indian Science Congress with a contingent of scientists, technical officers, and a number of research scholars. Media has also covered the ICAR-CIFRI activities at 108th Indian Science Congress. During the valedictory session on 7th January 2023, Dr. B. K. Das was declared elected as the Sectional President of Animal Veterinary and Fisheries Science section of 109th Indian Science Congress to be held on 3-7 January 2024.
