Sheohar, Bihar is a very resourceful district in regard to inland open waters - chaurs, mauns, rivulets, canals, and reservoirs. Despite abundant aquatic resources, the supply of adequate fish is short of demand in Sheohar. Keeping a note on upgrading the knowledge and skill, a 7 days training programme on “Inland Fisheries Management” has been organized at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during 01 to 07 February, 2023 with a mission towards production enhancement and livelihood security.
A total of 30 active fishers participated in this programme. Inaugurating the programme, Dr. B.K. Das, Director of the Institute emphasised on the knowledge based skill development of the fishers on various aspects of inland fisheries production system and management ensuring their sustainable livelihood. The fishers have to explore their available resources for optimum production and productivity by acquiring scientific knowledge and applications-he opined.
The farmers were exposed to both in-house theoretical and practical knowledge on inland fisheries management, pond construction and management, soil and water quality aspects, feed and feeding protocol, ornamental fish farming, breeding aspects of fishes, nutritional requirements, fish health management, enclosure culture, economic aspects of different fish culture activities, fish marketing, governance pattern etc besides exposing them to on-field demonstrations covering different aspects of inland fisheries development at ICAR-CIFA Kalyani, progressive fishers’ farms at Khamargachi and Balagarh, East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), ornamental fish markets, etc; also exposing them in Bio-flock units, ornamental hatchery unit
and Feed Mill of the Institute. Hands-on training on different need-based aspects like basic water quality parameters, identification of fish food organisms, fish disease identification protocol etc also provided to them. The feedback session was marked with overall satisfaction of the trainees admitting their up-scaling of knowledge which would be of immense help in their future course of endeavours.
