ICAR-CIFRI Organized Hands on Training cum Field Demonstration on Carp Breeding under NTPC-CSR scheme

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized three days “Hands on training cum field demonstration on brood stock development and fish breeding of carps” during 8th to 10th February 2023 at ICAR-CISH-KVK, Malda. The training programme was organized in association with ICAR-CISH, KVK, Malda under the funding support of NTPC, Farakka under the project title “ Imparting State of Art Knowledge on Fish breeding to the local fishermen for livelihood improvement and enhancing the native fish population through ranching programme in river Ganga”. The programme was inaugurated by Shri I. Uppal, AGM, NTPC Farakka as Chief Guest, Shri M. DasGupta, DFO, Department of Fisheries, Malda as Guest of Honor, Shri V. V. Diptikar, TO, representative of ICAR-CISH, Malda and Scientists from ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore.

Dr. A.K.Sahoo, Sr. Scientist and Project Co-Investigator welcomed the dignitaries and farmers and briefed on the objectives, and plan of activities of the training. Shri S. Pradhan, representative of NTPC explained the different schemes under the CSR of NTPC towards farmers’ livelihood improvement. Shri Diptikar, highlighted the facilities and various agricultural training programmes carried out at ICAR-CISH, KVK, Malda towards farmers skill development. Shri. Dasgupta provided the benefits in fish farming by adopting scientific based farming practises. Shri I. Uppal underlined the benefits of the training programme and highlighted that farmers should take advantages of the Fish farming for the livelihood improvement. Dr. D.K.Meena, Sr. Scientist and Project Co-Investigator proposed the formal vote of thanks to all the delegates, fish farmers and research scholars associated with the project and proposed special thanks to Dr. Dipak Nayak, Sr. Scientist and In-charge, ICAR-CISH, KVK, Malda and Dr. Shailesh Kumar, Subject Matter Specialist (Fy. Sc) for their keen interests and supports.

Technical sessions including, theory classes on pond preparation and nursery pond management, brood stock identification, induced breeding technologies, description about different types of hatcheries, hatchery operation, and feed and feeding management for carp culture followed by on site demonstration on carp breeding by injection of inducing agent were carried out. Different stages of embryonic development were demonstrated in the Laboratory. A visit to FRP carp hatchery was made followed by its detailed operation and demonstration on eggs and spawn collection was provided. On site collection of natural food and identification were conducted.

A total of 74 fish farmers including 35 males and 39 females, representing youth, SC and ST communities have actively been participated. The programme was coordinated by Drs. A. K. Sahoo, D. K. Meena under the supervision of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and Project Investigator, NTPC.
