Training on ‘Inland Fisheries Management’ for the fish farmers of Berhampore, Murshidabad West Bengal towards livelihood improvement

The purpose of a 3-day training program on "Inland Fisheries Management" at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during March 27–29, 2023 is to double the income of fish farmers in Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal through skill development and capacity building.

A total of 18 active fish farmers took active part in the ATMA-sponsored program. Dr. B.K. Das, Director of the Institute, while inaugurating the program, emphasized on the focussed need for fishers to acquire their skills in many aspects of inland fisheries management in hopes of ensuring a sustainable livelihood. Additionally, he urged the fishermen to explore their available resources for optimization of their outputs and productivity by learning about and using knowledge.The aiming of this training program was to bridge the knowledge, skill, and attitude gaps that existed among farmers on inland fisheries management.

The course contents included lectures on topics like the ecology and fisheries of inland open waters, sediment and water chemistry, pond management, natural fish food organisms and their significance in open waters, enclosure culture, ornamental fishery, fish feed management, disease management, economic evaluation, etc. They were given access to the Institute's ornamental hatchery units and feed mill as well as hands-on training in a diverse array of need-based topics, such as fundamental water quality parameters, the preparation of fish feed using locally available feed ingredients, the identification of fish pathogens and their corresponding remedial measures, etc.

The feedback session was marked by the trainees' affirmations of their overall satisfaction and the upscaling of their knowledge that would be used in their respective water resources. In his concluding remarks, Dr.Md. Abul Hassan, HoD, FEM Division, encouraged the farmers to use the knowledge they had learned throughout this training to combine greater productions. Dr. A. K. Das and Dibakar Bhakta successfully led the program's coordination.
