India is blessed with vast inland resources in the form of rivers and associated water bodies like rivulets, floodplains, wetlands, reservoirs, and wetlands. The Ganga is the largest and most revered river in India. It supports a large number of commercially important fish species. Indian Major Carps viz. Gibelion catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala, and Labeo calbasu forms a prized fishery that contributed the maximum to the commercial catches. However, the catch trend of these species has shown a declining trend along the stretches of the river Ganga. This decline in fish yield is due to habitat modification, overfishing, invasion of exotics pollution, and other anthropogenic activities. Enhancement of IMCc in the Ganga river is essential for the conservation and revival of their stocks. Therefore, the national flagship program, ranching under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) by ICAR-CIFRI has been undertaken through the captive breeding technique for ex-situ conservation of IMCs in the river Ganga.
by ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute in the presence of Sri Abhishek Verma, Fisheries Development Officer Mirzapur, U.P. and Sri Rajesh Sharma, Co-convenor, Ganga Vichar Manch, Kashi Prant, NMCG; Dr. Dharm Nath Jha, Incharge of the Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagra, and local fishers. On both occasions, Dr. Dharm Nath Jha, in charge of the Centre, ICAR-CIFRI, Prayagraj informed the audience about the NAMAMI Gange Project and the work of the institute to restore and conserve fish diversity. The chief guests, explained the importance of the river Ganga, river ranching, and fish of the river and also how to conserve it for the future. Sri Rajesh Sharma briefed the audience about the importance of the NAMAMI Gange program for the Ganga River.
