The main objective of the established facility is to demonstrate and provide training on carp breeding for the youths, women and fish farmers in and around Farakka towards their livelihood improvement and conservation of native fish species in river Ganga through ranching programmes. The establishment was inaugurated by Shri. Satish.S, General Manager of NTPC Farakka as Chief Guest, and in presence of Shri P.K.Saha, AGM, Shri Pradhan, and Shri K. Patra from the NTPC, Farakka and Dr. B.K.Das, Director, Dr. A.K.Sahoo and other project team members from ICR-CIFRI. Dr. A.K. Sahoo, Co-PI explained that the FRP carp hatchery consists of 1000 lt of overhead tank, 3400 lt of breeding pool (1 unit) 1400 lt of hatching pool (1 unit) and 250 lt of spawn collection tank. He explained that the facility could hold 10lk spawn with 10kg brooders of male and female fish. Furthermore, a demonstration on induced breeding of Catla, Labeo catla through Spawnpro inducing agent was shown to the delegates and the invited fish farmers..
Dr. B.K.Das, PI of the project briefed the operation of the FRP carp hatchery and emphasised on the importance of the establishment towards livelihood improvement of the poor fish farmers, youths and women empowerment through fish seed production as a part of technical skill development. The unit was established by the project team members Drs. A.K.Sahoo and D.K.Meena under the guidance of Dr. B.K.Das.
