In light to the current Namami Gange programme a river ranching was organized on 25th April, 2023 at Farakka, Murshidabad under its flagship Namami Gange Programme. On this occasion, 2.0 lakh fish juveniles (>10 gm) of Indian Major Carps comprising of Rohu, Catla, Mrigal and Calbasu were ranched in the river Ganga by the different designated officers and local fishers of the district during the event. The programme was graced by the number of officials from the NTPC, FBP, District Forest officer, Department of State Fisheries Murshidabad, ICAR-CISH KVK Maldah, and District project officer of Namami Gange Project.
The event was followed by a mass awareness campaign involving more than 71 local active fishers of river Ganga where they were sensitized about the river conservation and their importance in future. Dr. Basanta Kumar Das, Director CIFRI and PI NMCG highlighted the importance of ranching and its beneficial effects towards fish conservation. Dr. Das also addressed the gathering on the importance of our mother river Ganga in our daily life. Active participation was noticed among all the sections of the society including local fishers at different Ganga banks. The mass awareness was also created regarding depleted fish stock of Ganga River along with the importance of Gangetic health required to sustain fishes and Dolphins as well as Hilsa fisheries.
FBP General manager, Shri R.D. Deshpande; NTPC GM, Shri Satish. S and District Fisheries Officer, Shri Sanjay Kumar Mishra emphasize on the beneficial effect of ranching and aware the local fishers about Ganga pollution. KVK representative Dr. Deepak Nayek sensitize the local fishers to conserve the indigenous fishes of river ganga and not use adapt destructive fishing methods like use of mosquito net and river water poisoning etc. Dr. Amiya Kumar Sahoo senior scientist from ICAR-CIFRI sought for working together with different organisation to make Mother Ganga clean and restore her diversity as earlier. He has also highlighted the importance of antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture and fisheries.
