ICAR-CIFRI Celebrates World Intellectual Property Day

On the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day, 2023, ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute celebrated the “can do” attitude of women inventors, creators and entrepreneurs around the world and their ground-breaking work. Celebrating innovative and creative scientific works of all women researchers of ICAR-CIFRI organized a workshop on the theme “Women in IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity” in hybrid mode on 26th April, 2023. 150 Scientist, Technical officers and research scholars of institute headquarter Barrackpore and regional centres of Guwahati, Prayagraj, Bengaluru, Vadodara, Kolkata and Kochi participated in the programme.
Ganesh Chandra, In-charge, ITMU, ICAR-CIFRI in his welcome address welcomed the dignitaries Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI and the lead speaker Dr. Poonam J Singh, In-Charge, ITMU, ICAR-NBFGR and all HoDs, Scientists, officers and other staff members present in the meetingand briefed about the significance of World IP day. He discussed about the importance and relevance of IP in fisheries science.

Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, in his inaugural address stressed on the role of women scientist in innovations and creativity in research. He emphasised that honourable Secretary DARE and DG, ICAR has stressed that each scientists should have at least one product/technology or patent. He stressed that as a women researcher emphasis should be to protect IP of our research output through Patents, Copyrights, design and other means.
Dr. U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR in his address stressed that priorities of our research should now focus on to deliver technologies/ product with full IP protection. Our research system should not be directionless but should be focussed and IP protection and product development should be inbuilt component of research project. Young scientists should come out with more innovation and help country to increase its ranking in global innovation index.

Dr. Poonam J. Singh delivered her lead lecture on the topic “ Thinking out of box: Innovation and Creativity in Science”. She discussed about helping young inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs to use intellectual property (IP) to achieve their goals, generate income, create jobs, and tackle local and global challenges by supporting community and national development. She told that women all over the world are influencing the world with their imagination, inventiveness, and hard work, but they frequently face substantial barriers to gaining the information, skills, resources, and support they require to prosper.
Dr. S. K. Manna, In-Charge, PME, ICAR-CIFRI proposed formal vote of thanks. The World IP day celebration ended up with the message that the world needs more and more ideas to make it a better place to live.
