ICAR- CIFRI ranches two lakhs IMC on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima at Sheoraphuli Ghat, West Bengal

On the occasion of holy Buddha Purnima, a ‘National River Ranching Programme-2023 was organised by ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore under Namami Gange programme at Sheoraphuli Ghat, Barrackpore, West Bengal on 5th May 2023. In continuation of the national river ranching programme which was initiated from 5th of April 2023 from Nabadwip, West Bengal the pragramme was carried out at different stretch spanning across 3 different states.

Till date more than 7 lakhs fish fingerlings were ranched during the period of April to May, 2023 with a target of 22 lakhs. The present river ranching at Barrackpore was the first programme in the lower stretch of river Ganga during the 2nd edition of National River Ranching. A total of 2.0 lakhs of advanced fingerlings (> 150mm) of Indian Major Carps were released in the river by director ICAR- CIFRI, Dr. B. K. Das, Dr. Harcharan Singh (Consultant NMCG), and other scientists of the institute. In addition to this, 75 numbers of Indian Major Carps were tagged with an average size of 500 g in the river to understand the migratory pathway of the species. Awareness was also performed at Monirampore ferry ghat, Barrackpore, among the local resident and fishers.
