Capacity building of the fish farmers of Nawada district, Bihar

Nawada district is a part of the ancient Magadh division of south Bihar and the climate of the district is sub-tropical to sub-humid in nature. The district also faces the problem of water scarcity during the dry season. A seven days training programme on “Inland Fisheries Management” was organized at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during 13 July to 19 July 2023 as a part of skill development and capacity building programme with an objective towards doubling the fishers’ income of this district. A total of 30 trainees took active part in this programme.
Inaugurating the programme, Dr. B.K. Das, Director of the Institute emphasised on the skill development of the fishers on various aspects of inland fisheries management ensuring their sustainable livelihood security. He also urged the fishers to explore their available resources for optimum production and productivity by acquiring scientific knowledge and applications. During the training, the farmers were exposed to both in-house theoretical and practical knowledge along with on-field demonstrations covering different aspects of inland fisheries management, including pond construction and management, soil and water quality management, feed and feeding protocol, ornamental fish farming, breeding aspects of fishes, nutritional requirements, fish health management, enclosure culture, economic aspects of different fish culture activities, fish marketing, governance pattern, impact of climate on fisheries etc. Besides, the trainees have been taken to field exposure visits which include ICAR-CIFA Kalyani Centre, balagarh, East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) as well as the ornamental fish markets of Galib Street (Kolkata) etc. 
The trainees also visited and gained first hand information on Bio-floc system, Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS), ornamental fish farming practice and fish feed preparation process in the institute’s feed mill. The trainees have been provided with hands-on training facility on different need-based aspects like basic water quality parameters, fish feed preparation using locally available feed ingredients etc.
The trainees were also given their certificates after the interaction session with Dr. B.K Das, Director CIFRI, Dr. S. Samanta, HOD,FRAI Division; Dr. R.K Manna, HOD,RWF Division. The feedback session was marked with overall satisfaction of the trainees admitting their up-scaling of knowledge which would be applied in their respective water resources.
