Empowering Rural women under SCSP programme through Backyard Pond Farming: ICAR-CIFRI Intervention

Sundarban ecosystem is affected by natural calamities such as Amphan, Fani, Ayla, and floods round the year, including saline introduced into their waterbodies. Their economy is affected by these types of natural calamities.

The economy of the Sundarbans deltaic region is mainly dependent on rice, fish, beetle and apiculture which is the backbone of the community. ICAR-CIFRI is playing a major role in increasing their livelihood using small scale aquaculture in their backyard ponds since 2019 with the help of local communities, NGOs, FPOs and SHGs. Over past 4 years, more than 5000 beneficiaries belonging to SC and ST communities were adopted who have earned their livelihood through simple CIFRI intervention. This year in the month of May, 5000 women beneficiaries were also adopted by the CIFRI. On August 20 2023, another 100 women beneficiaries belonging to six villages (Amjhara, Basanti, Ramchandrakhali, Uttar Mokamberia, Fulmalancha, Charavidya) in collaboration with Kultali Milon Tirtha Society, an awareness programme and input distribution on backyard pond fish culture was organized in Kultali, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. In this awareness programme Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, emphasized the role of small-scale aquaculture which will increase their nutrition, and livelihood through simple interventions in their backyard ponds. He also explained the previous benefits of their interventions and the success of the rural farmers.

Mr. Lokiman Molla, a social activist and secretary of the society stressed the role of CIFRI in the upliftment of socio-economic conditions of the rural poor who are exclusively dependent on the agricultural economy. Dr. Lianthuamluaia, Scientist and In-Charge of the SCSP explain the role of SCSP programme of the institute. After the awareness programme input distributions were done to the beneficiaries. The inputs, mostly fish seed and feed were distributed among the 100 rural women. Dr, Shreya Bhattacharya explained the institute's role for handholding in the local language and made the necessary arrangement for the distribution.
