Ornamental fish farming, which was emphasised by the Honourable Prime Minister of India and is also being prioritized by PMSSY, is an enterprise to strengthen the household economy of rural women. Ornamental fish trade play a significant role in the Indian export as well as in the domestic market. ICAR-CIFRI has already started ornamental farming in different parts of India including West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha in order to augment the livelihood of the rural women under SCSP scheme.
Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Kolkata distributed ornamental fish culture unit consisting of FRP tank, aerator and other accessories including thermostat, live-bearer fish, ornamental fish feed was distributed to 50 SC women of Sajnekhali, West Bengal. Dr. Das explained a variety of ornamental fish farming-related aspects, emphasizing how it could improve the rural economy in long run. He also encouraged them to leverage this opportunity for their family's economic advancement. Dr. Lianthuamluaia, Scientist, ICAR-CIFRI elaborated on the financial advantages of ornamental fish culture being used by the other women's community. Dr. S. Bhattacharya provided a thorough live demonstration and explanation of the procedures for maintaining the live bearer. Each beneficiary receives a booklet written in the Bengali language at the program's conclusion. The beneficiaries were motivated and got a newfound sense of confidence to actively implement the ornamental fish culture for livelihood improvement. This creative strategy devised by the ICAR-CIFRI to build an ornamental fish village is a step towards encouraging women to start their own rural enterprise.
