ICAR-CIFRI organized input distribution-cum-awareness programme for cage fishers in Dumbur reservoir, Tripura on 04.11.23

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati organized an ‘Input distribution-cum-awareness programme for popularizing cage aquaculture in Dumbur reservoir, Tripura’ at Superintendent of Fisheries Office, Gandacherra(Gandatwisa) in collaboration with Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura on November 4, 2023. Dignitaries present in the programme included Smt. Nandita Debbarma Reang, Hon’ble MLA, 44-Raima Valley, Tripura; Shri Santosh Das, TCS (SSG), Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura; Shri Arindam Das, TCS, SDM, Gandatwisa; Shri N.G. Noatia, DDF, Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura among others. In the beginning, Dr. Dipesh Debnath, Senior Scientist & Organizing Secretary of the programme welcomed fishers of Dumbur reservoir to SF office.

He emphasized that there was immense scope of increasing fish production of Tripura through cage culture in Dumbur reservoir. Shri N.G. Noatia, DDF, Dept. of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura explained the benefit and cost ratio of cage culture in details and reiterated that cage culture was highly profitable if it was done along scientific lines. Shri Arindam Das, TCS, SDM, Gandatwisa expressed that fishes of Dumbur had high demand in the past and availability of fish was also very high. He emphasized that the decline in fish production from the reservoir was caused by many anthropogenic factors including indiscriminate fishing and use of illegal gears. Shri Santosh Das, TCS, Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura urged the fishers and fish farmers to adopt scientific farming practices that will lead to improvement in production. He also expressed that fish production from Dumbur reservoir can be doubled with scientific management thereby inflow of fishes from other states could be reduced. Dr. Shyamal C.S. Das, Organizing Secretary of the programme urged the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura to keep a record of fish production through capture and culture fisheries (i.e., cage culture).

Smt. Nandita Debbarma Reang, Hon’ble MLA, 44-Raima Valley, Tripura in her address urged the fishers to take utmost benefit from the awareness programme being organized by the scientists of ICAR-CIFRI. In the technical session, Dr. D. Debnath discussed important aspects of cage culture technology relevant to Dumbur reservoir. Dr. Shyamal C.S. Das, Organizing Secretary of the programme interacted and answered all queries raised by the participants. A total of 7000 kg CIFRI CageGrow floating fish feed was ceremonially distributed among the cage fishers of Dumbur by the hon’ble delegates of the programme. The programme was organized under the NEH Component of ICAR-CIFRI with dynamic leadership of Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore and Dr. S.K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati.
