ICAR-CIFRI celebrated World Fisheries Day at the “Pan India” level

World Fisheries Day aims to draw attention to overfishing, habitat destruction and other serious threats to the sustainability of our freshwater and marine resources. This year ICAR-CIFRI celebrated World Fisheries Day at the ‘Pan India’ level. This year the theme of World Fisheries Day is “Build enabling policy environments for small-scale artisanal fisheries.”

Keeping it in mind, CIFRI conducted three mass awareness camps at Hasnabad, West Bengal, at Vazhani Reservoir, Kerala and at Sangam, Prayagraj, UttarPradesh. .

More than, 350 small-scale artisanal fishers were sensitized on ecosystem health management and the importance of conservation through these awareness programmes. As part of World Fisheries Day, 2023, ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati participated in the exhibition organised by the Directorate of Fisheries, Govt. of Assam. Regional Research Centre, Bangalore participated in the exhibition conducted by the Department of Fisheries, Karnataka. More than 1000 people all over Karnataka witnessed the event.
On the occasion of World Fisheries Day, the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has organized a Global Fisheries Conference at Ahmedabad,Gujrat and Regional Research Sation, Vadodara participated in the exhibition to showcase CIFRI’s technologies and achievements in this prestigious forum.

Dr. B.K Das, Director, CIFRI also attended the conference organized by the Ministry at Ahmedabad, Gujrat.
As a part of the celebration, ICAR-CIFRI has distributed fisheries inputs like fish seeds and fish feed to 84 women of fisherfolk community at Hasnabad, Sundarbans under CIFRI’s ‘Mission 3000’. Etropuls suratensis seeds were stocked in the Vazhani reservoir, Kerala to support the livelihood of the tribal fishers of the reservoir. World Fisheries Day was celebrated by ICAR-CIFRI at “Pan India’ level to sensitize and aware the small-scale artisanal fisheries about conservation needs, habitat restoration and existing policies.
