ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW), during 18th to 24th Nov. 2023 with major theme on “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together”. The main aim of the programme was to increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policymakers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. During this week long programme, ICAR-CIFRI undertook various activities including series of lecturers to the students and faculties form different colleges in and around Kolkata, creating awareness among the fishers and agriculture farmers in KVK, Malda and among the stake holders of river Ganga at Farakka. Dr. B.K.Das, Director and Dr. S. K. Manna, HOD of REF division highlighted the issues evolving antimicrobial resistance globally and aware participants to take necessary actions to stop this antibiotic resistance during the training programme on “Recent Advances in River Ecology and Fisheries Management”.
Dr. A.K.Sahoo PI of the project said that AMR has become a serious threat to the entire planet and to the people particularly in the freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, collective approaches need to be warranted to protect the earth. On 21st November, a mega awareness programme on AMR was organized by ICAR-CIFRI in association with KVK, Malda and at Farakka. Major stakeholders were fish farmers, agriculture farmers, representatives from Ganga Prahari (taking care of Ganga pollution and biodiversity conservation). Dr. Dipak Nayak, Officer In charge of KVK, Dr. Sailesh Kumar, SMS of KVK and Dr. A. K. Sahoo interacted with 80 farmers to create awareness on the responsible use of antibiotics, and mechanisms of development of antimicrobial resistance.
