ICAR-CIFRI conducted short course training programme on “Advances in Heavy Metals and Microplastics Analysis (ICP-MS & µ FTIR)”

A short course training programme on “Advances in Heavy Metals and Microplastics Analysis (ICP-MS & µFTIR)” has been inaugurated by Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI at the conference hall of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore. All the Head of Divisions and Resource persons from ICAR-CIFRI have graced the occasion with their presence. The 5-days short course training programme during 11-15 December 2023 aims to impart knowledge on advance techniques in heavy metal and microplastics analysis using sophisticated instruments like ICP-MS and µFTIR. A total of 24 participants consisting of scientist, assistant professors, technical officers, students, and research scholars with various academic background like microbiology, organic chemistry, fisheries and zoology from different institutes and universities are attending the training programme.

At the outset, Dr. S. K. Nag, Coordinator of the training programme welcomed all the participants and gave an overview of the 5-days training schedule. The Head of Divisions, in their remarks they have emphasized the importance of the training programme and learning the advanced techniques for pollution assessment in recent years.

In his remarks, Dr. B.K. Das has highlighted the importance of the training programme in imparting the demonstration of analytical instruments with concurrent hand-on practical sessions during the courses. He urged that monitoring and reporting of the polluted water bodies is imperative for proper management for achieving the one health and one planet concept. He also stressed that statistically significant sample size should be analysed before drawing any conclusion and reporting about presence of any toxic substance in biotic and abiotic samples as the news would have wide repercussion in the society. He emphasizes the importance of aquatic food safety and nutritional security to the global population and there is a need to aware the public regarding the food safety point of view.
The programme has ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. D. J. Sarkar, Co-ordinator of the training programme. The overall training programme was co-coordinated by Dr. Soma Das Sarkar and Dr. Santhana Kumar V. with the technical assistance from Mr. Lokenath Chakraborty, Technical Officer, ICAR-CIFRI.
